Cricket World Cup 2023: New Zealand stun England in opener
The ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 kicked off with a bang, as New Zealand thrashed defending champions England by nine wickets in the opening match at Ahmedabad. Devon Conway and Rachin Ravindra smashed centuries to power New Zealand to a crushing victory, chasing down 283 with 13.4 overs to spare. The left-handed pair of Conway (152) and Ravindra (123) put on an unbeaten stand of 273 for the second wicket, the highest partnership in World Cup history. England, who won the toss and opted to bat, were restricted to 282 for 9, with Joe Root (79) and Jos Buttler (75) being the main contributors. New Zealand’s spinners and pacers shared the wickets, with Mitchell Santner taking 3 for 41.
Asian Games 2023: India secure best-ever medal tally
India have achieved their best-ever medal haul at the 19th Asian Games in Hangzhou, China, with 16 gold, 27 silver, and 31 bronze medals. India’s total tally of 74 medals surpassed their previous best of 69 medals at Jakarta in 2018. India’s athletics and shooting teams led the medal rush, with 29 and 22 medals respectively. The shooters won seven gold, nine silver, and six bronze in various events. India’s other 14 gold medals came in women’s cricket, tennis, squash, archery, and equestrian. India also won their first-ever medal in rugby sevens, a bronze in men’s event.
Champions League: Man Utd, Arsenal rocked as Bayern Munich edge Copenhagen
The UEFA Champions League group stage witnessed some shocking results, as Manchester United and Arsenal suffered humiliating defeats at the hands of Young Boys and Ajax respectively. Man Utd lost 2-1 to Young Boys in Switzerland, despite taking an early lead through Cristiano Ronaldo. The Red Devils were reduced to 10 men after Aaron Wan-Bissaka was sent off in the first half, and conceded two goals in the second half, including a stoppage-time winner by Jordan Siebatcheu. Arsenal were thrashed 5-1 by Ajax in Amsterdam, with former Gunner Dusan Tadic scoring twice and setting up two more goals. Arsenal had no answer to Ajax’s attacking prowess, and also had Nicolas Pepe sent off in the second half.
In other matches, Bayern Munich came from behind to beat Copenhagen 2-1 in Denmark, with Robert Lewandowski scoring a late penalty. Real Madrid also snatched a late win over Napoli in Italy, thanks to an own goal by goalkeeper Alex Meret. Chelsea stunned Fulham with a quickfire double in the second half to win 2-0 at Stamford Bridge.
