The Current State of the Yamuna River During Flooding

The Yamuna River, one of India’s largest and most significant rivers, is currently grappling with a serious flood situation. Heavy rainfall and the release of surplus water from the Hathnikund Barrage in Haryana have caused the river’s water level to rise significantly.

At present, the Yamuna’s water level stands at 205.92 meters, surpassing the danger mark of 205.33 meters. This has resulted in extensive waterlogging in various parts of Delhi, including major roads and low-lying areas.

The situation is particularly acute in Delhi, where the river’s water levels have soared to a record high of 208.6 meters. This has led to the inundation of low-lying areas and necessitated evacuation measures. The city is also potentially facing a drinking water crisis as three water treatment plants have been forced to shut down due to the floods.

The flood situation has caused considerable disruption to everyday life. Educational institutions have been temporarily closed, and students who lost their uniforms and books in the floods are being permitted to attend classes without them until replacements are arranged. The city’s administration is working round the clock to manage the situation and provide relief to those affected.
