Good News Before the Landing of Chandrayaan-3

Good News Before the Landing of Chandrayaan-3
India’s ambitious lunar mission, Chandrayaan-3, is on the brink of making history. The mission aims to land near the Moon’s south pole, a region that has been little explored by previous missions. If successful, India will become the first nation to achieve a soft landing in this region.

The Journey So Far
The spacecraft, which consists of an orbiter, lander, and rover, was launched on July 14 from the Sriharikota space centre in South India1. The lander, named Vikram after the founder of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), carries within it a 26kg rover named Pragyaan.

The journey to the moon has taken longer than those of the Apollo missions in the 1960s and 1970s due to the use of less powerful rockets. This required the probe to orbit Earth several times to gain speed before embarking on its month-long lunar trajectory.

The Final Countdown
As of now, Vikram is scheduled to touch down on the lunar surface shortly after 6 pm India time (12:30 GMT) today. The descent will start from its current height of 25km (15 miles), and scientists predict that the following few minutes will be crucial as Vikram attempts to make a touchdown on an area that is "very uneven, full of craters and boulders".

The Good News
The good news is that the first phase of Chandrayaan’s deboosting process has been completed successfully. This process involves slowing down the speed of Vikram Lander to ensure a smooth landing3.

Moreover, former Indian space chief K Sivan has expressed confidence in the mission’s success. He stated that ISRO had made corrections after a failure four years ago when scientists lost contact with the previous lunar module moments before its slated landing.

Global Support
The mission has also received global support. Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and Tesla CEO Elon Musk have expressed their support for India’s moon mission.

Looking Ahead
Once Vikram lands and the dust settles, Pragyaan will crawl out and roam around the rocks and craters on the Moon’s surface, gathering crucial data and images. These will be sent back to Earth via Vikram and the orbiter.

In conclusion, as we await this historic moment, it’s clear that Chandrayaan-3 is not just a mission for India but a significant step for humanity’s exploration of space.

Organic Agriculture: A Sustainable Approach to Farming

Organic Agriculture: A Sustainable Approach to Farming
Organic agriculture is a holistic production management system that promotes and enhances agro-ecosystem health, including biodiversity, biological cycles, and soil biological activity. It is a system that begins to consider potential environmental and social impacts by eliminating the use of synthetic inputs, such as synthetic fertilizers and pesticides, veterinary drugs, genetically modified seeds and breeds, preservatives, additives and irradiation. These are replaced with site-specific management practices that maintain and increase long-term soil fertility and prevent pest and diseases.

The Essence of Organic Agriculture
Organic agriculture can be defined as "an integrated farming system that strives for sustainability, the enhancement of soil fertility and biological diversity while, with rare exceptions, prohibiting synthetic pesticides, antibiotics, synthetic fertilizers, genetically modified organisms, and growth hormones". It emphasizes the use of management practices in preference to the use of off-farm inputs.

The Benefits of Organic Agriculture
Compared with conventional agriculture, organic farming uses fewer pesticides, reduces soil erosion, decreases nitrate leaching into groundwater and surface water, and recycles animal wastes back into the farm. These benefits are counterbalanced by higher food costs for consumers and generally lower yields.

Organic Agriculture in the News
Organic agriculture has been making headlines around the world.

In Tripura, India, 20,000 farmers are engaged in organic farming. The state government recently adopted the “Meghalaya State Organic and Natural Farming Policy 2023” to turn the hill state into a “national leader” in organic farming.

In Bhutan, the ambitious goal of becoming the world’s first 100 percent organic nation by 2020 is on track. The aim is to make agriculture more sustainable and establish a resilient, productive organic farming system while preserving the environment.

In Sikkim, India, Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang laid the foundation stone for the Sikkim Organic Agriculture University (SOAU)7. The Sikkim assembly passed the Sikkim Organic Agriculture University Act earlier this year.

Conclusion
Organic agriculture is not just a trend; it’s a commitment to sustainable practices that benefit both the environment and consumers. As more farmers adopt these practices and more consumers choose organic products, we can look forward to a future where agriculture works in harmony with nature.

Why Luna-25 Crashed: A Detailed Analysis

Why Luna-25 Crashed: A Detailed Analysis

On August 22, 2023, the world woke up to the news of the crash of Russia’s Luna-25 spacecraft   The Luna-25, a pilotless mission aiming to become the first to land on the moon’s south pole, suffered a mishap during its landing attempt.  The Russian space agency, Roscosmos, confirmed that the Luna-25 spacecraft crashed into the moon due to engine failure.

The Cause of the Crash
According to Roscosmos Director General Yury Borisov, the spacecraft’s engines were turned on over the weekend to put Luna-25 into a “pre-landing orbit" but did not shut down properly . Instead of the planned 84 seconds, the engines worked for 127 seconds . This extended operation time caused the spacecraft to plunge onto the moon.

The Aftermath
The Luna-25 mission was Russia’s first lunar mission since 1976, when it was part of the Soviet Union5. The crash of Luna-25 marks a setback in Russia’s renewed lunar exploration efforts. However, despite this setback, Borisov vowed to “stay in the lunar race” . He emphasized that "In no case should the lunar programme be interrupted, that would be the worst decision".

The Underlying Issue
Borisov attributed the failure of Luna-25 to Russia’s decades-long pause in lunar exploration . He stated that "The negative experience of interrupting the lunar program for almost 50 years is the main reason for the failures".  This highlights the challenges faced by space agencies when reviving dormant space programs.

In conclusion, while the crash of Luna-25 is undoubtedly a setback for Roscosmos and its lunar exploration efforts, it also serves as a reminder of the complexities and challenges inherent in space exploration. Despite this incident, Roscosmos remains committed to its lunar program and is determined to learn from this experience.
